The danger of oil shale

Geologists think, they have find some new oilfield here in France, but a new kind of petrol called the oil shale. This petrol is contained in a hard rock : the shale. Only in France, they estimate that there may be a few hundred billion of barrels. Nevertheless, exploited this oil shale is not without risk for nature and indirectly for our safety. Are we ready to sacrifice our beautiful landscape for hundred billion more of petrol barrels ? In the U.S, this decision has already been taken. Survey on the damage of the oil shale, direction the North Dacota in the USA.

Here, there are three new oil well every day. Since few years, it has made hundred of people very rich by borrowing their farland to oil industrials. The oil shale has  transformed a entire region by giving to normal people hundred of millions dollars and creating a huge “boum” economic : in this state, the unemployment doesn’t exist ! Workers have to live in improvised mobile-home as the state has become popular.  A shinning situation, that we could have here in France by exploiting our oil shale. However, you will realize when I present you in which conditions the oil shale is exploiting that you wouldn’t have oil well near from your house …

Indeed to extract the oil shale it’s impossible to use conventionnal method like with traditionnal petrol. Contrary to tradionnal petrol that you “just” have to  dig down for hundred meter and pumped the petrol,  with oil shale, oil industrials have to use  a more complicated technic more dangerous for the environment … Firstly they have to dig verticaly on 3000 meters and then dig horizontaly on 2 km. After they inject a chimic product in high pression, the objective is to split the shale on several hundred meters to recover the petrol, this technic is called the fracturation. In the chemistry molecule, we find 8 chimic products, some are flammable, others are corrosive and others pick a etiquette danger of death, at the end 100 000 L of chimic products… Moreover in order to make a good drilling, they need water, a lot of water … 8 millions liter of water per fracturation and just in North Dacota there are 2000 wells …

Besides after the fracturation, 80 % of the chemical product is being up to the surface. It’s a highly toxic product  that oil industrials don’t know what to do with … Six new open ponds are created every day. This open ponds supposed to be sealed, contaminate in reality the agricologic field and the evaporation of some particles contaminate people arround …

The road of lithium

Drive differently without using any petrol is become a priority. From New York to Moscou, from Rio to Bombay, all arround the world, the number of cars explode. There are about 1 billion cars in circulation and this number will be multiplied by 2 in 30 years. Just in Pekin, there are 2000 cars sold on one day. By continuing like this, it’s a certainty that the petrol will not be enough to make people’s cars work. In front of this situation, scientist and engineer search  by all means, alternatives of petrol.

But today carmakers, think they have find a solution : a car which run without petrol. For the moment, there are just 8000 electric cars that drive in France but all the carmakers will fight together to create the car of tomorrow. The electrical car is the star waiting in the entire world.From Paris to Pekin, electrical cars are expose in podium of all big auto shows. Often sport cars, often citadine cars or berline, everybody announce the electrical car like the vehicule of the next 20 years.

But to ensure that we adopt it, we have to solve a small problem : the batterie. The batterie is the element that replace the reservoir of petrol, it permits to stock the electricty to drive. All the issues for carmakers are to have batteries that stock the maximum energy possible for drive the maximum longer possible. For that, they have to use a natural essential ressource, without it the future of the electrical car is compromise. This natural ressource that’s the lithium, a lightweight metal  that float on water, a very soft metal that cut like butter. In order to make driving a car it’s necessary to have a lot of lithium, in mean 15kg by battery. That’s for tis reason, that this metal will become so strategic. But the problem is that this material is not very easy to extract and not without consequence in our environment.

Move now where the lithium is coveted by the carmakers, in America latina, spread over three countries : Chili,Argentina y Bolivia in a region that people called the triangle of the lithium.  80 % of the lithium is concentrated in this region, an eldorado where is our energy of tomorrow. From 12 hours of plane of Paris, along the Cordiere of Andes, in the north of Chili, there is the most arid desert in the world : the desert of Atacama. In 2500 meters, a territory of extrem, teamperature of -7°C the night and 30 °C the day and in the middle of this extraordinary landscapes, hundred of  factory at breakneck. It’s here that we produce the majority of the lithium.

We will try to understand how the lithium is extracted in this region. Not far from factories, there are lot of active volcans culimanting in 5000 meters. This volcan are responsible of a natural phenomenon beginning since million of years. When the snow melt in winter, the water created will down the mountain carrying with it minerals. This minerals will be stacked under the desert and then split to recover the lithium. To extract the lithium, industrials have built huge factory at breakneck. Out of sight, hundreds of tanks, blue, turquoise, green the colors are surnatural, there are the result of a processus established in two years in order to obtain the lithium. But in the beginning, like the petrol, the first step in the forrage. This water is dump in a big pool with a system that permit to pump 200 000 L of water per hour. In this step the lithium is always mixed with others materials. To split it they use a natural energy : the solar energy. Thus, gradually the water is evaporated and only salt remaining and so on this water goes to pool and pool for at the end a pool with only lithium.

However, the lithium is not yet pure, to obtain the material that will equip our cars, this water will have to go on a tanker truck to be treated elsewhere. Indeed, in the desert of Atacama it lacks a resource essentially : soft water. It’s in an another factory in 300 km that the lithium will be transformed in a substance that will have to be washed with soft water. A soft water indispensable to obtain a white powder of high quality that will serve for our electrical battery. But take soft water from mountains is not without any consequence in Chili. To produce 1kg of lithium they need one L of soft water, that represent 15L for one battery. The problem is there are others mining activities that use soft water and by 20 years the Chili will miss of water.

How to produce energy without fuel ?

This story begins in the South of Spain near 20 km of Seville. Here in the middle of nowhere,hundred of mirros are implanted in the ground. There are here to capt a free, inexhaustible, ecologic energy :  the solar energy.

Each of this mirors aligned  in one square kilometers, return this energy in order to concentrate it in a huge tower. This huge tower similar to a huge oven is called a solar oven. Inside, the temperature is above 500 °c, in the middle, there is a network of pipe where water flow. In contact with solar rays, this water transformed to steam. This steam will supply a turbine, located in the bottom of the tower. The turbine will turns propellers what will supply a generator to deliver current. It’s the same processus of a classical plant as a difference that here they use solar energies instead of fossil energies. This electricty made with the solar rays is then injected accross the network to the capital of Andalousia : Seville

Spanish engineer produce electricity without any fuel since 4 years in this region of Seville. Near 20 km of the plant, Seville and his inhabittants use this energy to live. They use it for , the commun transport like the traway for traffic lights, for street lightnning or more simply for their life of everyday. Today, already the half of the 700 000 inhabittants of Seville use this solar energy but tomorrow the all city could  fonctionned with this green energy.

Diesel with feces

Sweedish scientist have developped since 25 years a process to extract the Methane containing in the human feces to transform it to effective diesel.

The human feces are captured up to a hill, outdoor the city, and stocked in small basins in 42 km. In order to catch the energy containing in this dirty water, there are split and injected in big cuves called “Digesteur”. Here, the feces are “digest” by bacterium and a gas called the Methane is evaporate. With this gas, we created bio-fuel. Everyday,18 000 m3 of gas are collected and distributed in the  network of Stockholm.

This diesel has been existing since 7 years in Stockholm, but already 30 % of the Stokcholm bus use it.

It’s fascinating, that how people can find solution, with sources that are problems for others. By using, this technic and ohters, the Sweedish have almost find the solution to life without petrol !

Gas of France vs EDF

Introduction

2 years ago, the French market of electricty was detained by two big compagnies Gas of France and EDF. Recently, the French government has elected a law to open the market. Today, there are about ten to share the market.

In order to still rise up, the big compagny has chosen to innovate. How ? By creating green department.

It’s like that, that EDF has created the EDF “New Energy” department.

As regards of this article, I will present you the solution implemented by this both company.

Developement

The future EDF solar power plant  : 143 MW of installed capacity.

Summer 2012

  • Implantation  in 522 ha
  • Cost of 434 millions euros
  • Electric consumption for 62 500 people

Conclusion

Even if, EDF and Gas of France has used two different renewable energy for their green powerplant, the goal and the means deployed was very similar. They understand that they have to diversify themself to still exist.

Biofuel with domestic waste

In a world where the price of oil continues to rise due to the fact that the ressource is decreasing, Swedish people have perhaps find the solution. Indeed, in order to save money they have developped a technic allowing them to create biofuel with domestic waste. How can they do that ?

In fact, in Stockholm in the front of each bulding there are traps that looks like safe in which people can bring their waste. There are traps for each kind of waste : organic waste are used for compost and non recycle waste for producing energy and replace petrol. Waste are transported by underground pipes to trucks in where there are collected.  These trucks bring them to a factory outskirts of the city. Then they are droped in a huge incinerator (where the temperature is near 1000 °C). The warm created by this huge oven is used to heat water in big baloons. The water temperature is above 100 °C when it quit the factory. Then it brings to people’s bulding by underground pipes and arrived in radiator inhabittants.

This technic is not an experimental method, 80 % of Stockholm inhabitants are heat by this domestic waste. This technic allows them to save 150 000 tons of petrol each year.  In France, this solution is only in development. However, in the town of Brest this method is used since four years. Why the development takes so long in the rest of France ?

Stockholm is  now the first green city in Europe, creating innovated techincs to improve environmental, reduce petrol consumption and save money by their self sufficiency energetic.

Blog introduction

Hello everyone,   

 

Welcome to lifewithoutpetrol blog, a blog for people who want to live differently. 

 

I chose to write this blog because world is being more and more sick and I think it’s our duty to make things improve. This idea as growed on my mind but it’s really after watching  the emission Capital earth what I really decided to move on. Indeed during this emission, Guy Lagache try to find out, all over the world, the alternative of petrol energy. The ideas presented really convince me and make me want to learn more about.

 

In this blog, I will try to present you these alternatives of petrol energy but I also show you the solutions which take place in our country (like Autolib and others ..).  A part dealing with saving energy will also be written. Finally a last part will be made of  “odd” things about lifewithoutpetrol.
